South Africa End Super Falcons’ 2027 World Cup Qualification Hopes

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in a CAF play-off match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco on Thursday.

Nigeria entered the play-off with another chance to keep alive their record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. However, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana secured victory to end the Falcons’ hopes.

The defeat came just days after Nigeria’s title defence was halted by Cameroon, who defeated the Falcons 1-0 in the quarter-finals on Sunday. The loss also ended Nigeria’s remarkable run of reaching at least the semi-finals in every previous edition of the WAFCON.

After a goalless first half against South Africa, Thembi Kgatlana broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, putting Banyana Banyana ahead.

South Africa doubled their advantage in the 77th minute through Refiloe Jane, leaving Nigeria with a difficult task of mounting a comeback.

The Falcons were handed a lifeline late in the game after a VAR review resulted in a penalty for Nigeria and a red card for Jane.

Christy Ucheibe converted the spot-kick in added time to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but Nigeria could not find a second goal before the final whistle.

The result means the Super Falcons will miss the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, bringing an end to their historic record of qualifying for every edition of the tournament.

South Africa will now advance to the intercontinental play-off tournament scheduled for November and December, where three teams will secure the remaining African places at the 2027 World Cup.

The outcome caps a disappointing WAFCON campaign for Nigeria, who arrived in Morocco as the reigning African champions after securing a record-extending 10th continental title last year.

Justine Madugu’s side made a difficult start to the tournament, losing 3-2 to WAFCON debutants Malawi on July 28. The Falcons recovered with a 1-0 victory over Zambia and a 3-0 win against Egypt to reach the quarter-finals through a dramatic qualification permutation.

However, Cameroon ended their title defence with a 1-0 victory, before South Africa delivered the final blow to Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.

For the Super Falcons, the 2026 WAFCON will go down as one of the most disappointing campaigns in the team’s history.
