The Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has revealed that significant strides are being made to ensure the commencement of the Students’ Loan Scheme in January 2024. This initiative aims to provide Nigerian students with the means to finance their educational pursuits.
Speaking at the 35th convocation ceremony of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos on Friday, Gbajabiamila outlined the streamlined process that would govern the loan application. He emphasized that applicants would engage in an entirely online application process, undergo online verification, and receive credits based on the validity of the documents and credentials they submit.
Earlier in the year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR signed the Students’ Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act, which laid the foundation for the Education Loan Fund. This legal framework aims to facilitate interest-free loans for Nigerian students. Gbajabiamila assured that efforts are underway to ensure that the loan program becomes accessible to students by January 2024. He highlighted the program’s commitment to transparency, stating that no personal connections would be necessary for qualification.
While acknowledging the positive impact of the Students’ Loan Scheme on funding quality public tertiary education, Gbajabiamila stressed the need for a broader discussion on addressing the financial needs of public tertiary institutions. He underscored the urgency of recognizing that tertiary education requires significant resources and advocated for exploring alternative funding sources beyond government subvention.
In his address, Gbajabiamila painted a vision of a perfect world where education is a fundamental right for all, and learning institutions are bastions of research and innovation open to everyone. However, he acknowledged the real-world challenges of education being treated as a commodity, with the inherent conflict between providing access and ensuring quality.
To bridge this gap, he called for an aggressive and sustained investment in education. This investment should not only focus on physical infrastructure but also prioritize technology hardware and software to facilitate information exchange and innovation.
Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, the Rector of YABATECH, emphasized the institution’s commitment to youth empowerment through various initiatives. These include the Quadruple Helix Collaboration Scheme for Youth Empowerment, the establishment of a Centre for Technology Marketing and Product Development, the YCT Industry Alliance Group (YIAG) Program, and the Students Work and Study Scheme. These programs collectively contribute to the college’s dynamic role in producing technical manpower for Nigeria’s economic and social development.
