In recent matches, the questionable performances of Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho have left Nigerian football enthusiasts bewildered as the national team faces challenges on the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The disappointment from missing the Qatar 2022 World Cup still lingers after the Super Eagles failed to secure a win against Ghana in April 2022, with Uzoho conceding a crucial long-range shot from Thomas Partey.
The current World Cup qualifiers have not brought much relief, as the Eagles, previously seen as favorites in a group featuring Lesotho, Rwanda, Benin, and South Africa, have struggled to secure victories. In the first two rounds of matches, Nigeria managed only draws, first against Lesotho (1-1) and then Zimbabwe (1-1). Notably, both goals conceded were attributed to goalkeeper errors, prompting concerns among Nigerian fans.
Former Nigerian international and ex-assistant coach of the U23 Olympic Eagles, Etta Egbe, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation to conduct an eye test for Uzoho to assess his visibility. Egbe, himself a former goalkeeper, expressed disbelief that Uzoho allowed a goal from a free kick 35 yards away, deeming it “unforgivable” and referencing a similar incident that cost Nigeria a spot in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Egbe also pointed fingers at the Super Eagles’ defense, emphasizing the need for strategic improvement to prevent opposing strikers from exploiting vulnerabilities at the team’s rear. As questions surround Uzoho’s performance and the team’s overall defensive capabilities, Nigerian football enthusiasts anxiously await potential solutions to bolster the Super Eagles’ journey in the World Cup qualifiers.
