Thanksgiving Storm to Disrupt Travel Across 17 Eastern States, Forecast Warns

A major storm system is set to disrupt Thanksgiving travel plans for millions of Americans, with heavy rain, snow, and low visibility expected to create treacherous conditions across 17 states in the eastern U.S. The storm, tracked by AccuWeather, is forecast to bring significant travel delays both on roads and in the skies, particularly in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.

Storm Brings Challenging Travel Conditions

AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno noted that while snow on major routes like Interstate 70 and 80 in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and parts of Pennsylvania is expected to melt upon contact, bursts of heavy snow could create patches of slush and slippery roadways.

“For the most part, snow will melt on the roads in these areas, but during heavier snowfall, some sections could become slushy and hazardous,” Rayno explained.

Rain and low cloud cover could further complicate air travel, particularly at major hubs along the East Coast. Delays and cancellations are anticipated to increase as the storm passes through critical air traffic zones.

State-Specific Impacts

  • Ohio Valley: Rain and snow in this region are expected to taper off by Thanksgiving morning, leaving slippery conditions in elevated areas.
  • New York and New England: Rain will dominate much of Thanksgiving Day, with snow likely to accumulate in higher elevations from northern Pennsylvania through central and northeastern New York, as well as into northern New England. Roads in mountainous and lower-lying areas alike could become hazardous.
  • Major East Coast Cities: Rain is forecast to end in Washington, D.C., by midmorning and Philadelphia around midday. New York City’s Thanksgiving Day Parade-goers will likely face rain in the morning, with skies clearing by the afternoon. Boston may see rain persist into the evening.

Safety Advisory from the National Safety Council

The National Safety Council (NSC) has issued travel safety recommendations, emphasizing caution during the holiday period. This year, the NSC projects 502 traffic fatalities over Thanksgiving weekend, underscoring the importance of vigilance on the roads.

Key recommendations for safe travel include:

  • Vehicle Preparation: Check oil levels and tire pressure before departing.
  • Avoid Distractions: Refrain from using cell phones while driving.
  • Follow Speed Limits: Remain mindful of pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Plan for Sobriety: Designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation.
  • Rest Before Driving: Avoid driving while fatigued.
  • Use Seat Belts: Ensure all passengers are buckled in.
  • Protect Vulnerable Passengers: Properly install child safety seats.
  • Double-Check for Children: Inspect vehicles to ensure no children are left behind.
  • Consider Alternate Modes of Travel: For short distances, leave the car at home if possible.

Travel Warnings and Preparedness

With the storm coinciding with one of the busiest travel periods of the year, experts advise travelers to prepare for delays and exercise patience. Whether driving through snowy terrain or navigating crowded airports, vigilance and safety precautions will be essential to avoid accidents and ensure a safe journey during the Thanksgiving holiday.
