The life of Raymond Anthony Aleogho Dokpesi, a prominent
figure in the Nigerian media industry, was

filled with remarkable achievements
and a resilient spirit. Born on October 25, 1951, in Nigeria, Dokpesi embarked
on a journey that would shape the media landscape of his country.

Dokpesi’s educational journey began at Loyola College in
Ibadan, where he received his early schooling. Recognizing his potential, he
furthered his studies at Immaculate Conception College in Benin City for his
secondary education. Eager to expand his horizons, Dokpesi pursued his tertiary
education at the prestigious University of Benin. However, his thirst for
knowledge led him abroad to Poland, where he obtained his Masters and doctorate
degrees from Wyzsza Szokta Morska Gdynia and the University of Gdansk Sopot,
respectively.

In 1969, Dokpesi’s professional career commenced when he
joined the Nigerian Ports Authority as a Marine Office Cadet. This early
experience laid the foundation for his later endeavors.

Dokpesi made history in the Nigerian media landscape by
becoming the first person to obtain a license for private radio broadcasting in
the country. This groundbreaking achievement led to the establishment of
Raypower 100.5FM, a radio station that quickly gained popularity for its
innovative programming and high-quality content. Additionally, Dokpesi founded
Africa Independent Television (AIT), which became the first African broadcast
station to transmit to the United States, showcasing Nigeria’s rich culture and
perspectives to a global audience.

Beyond his contributions to the media industry, Dokpesi
dedicated his talents to public service. He served as the Chief of Staff of the
Gongola State Government from October to December 1983, demonstrating his
commitment to the betterment of his community. Following this, he held the
position of Managing Director at African Ocean Line Limited from 1984 to 1988,
contributing to the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

However, in 2016, Dokpesi faced legal challenges when he was
arraigned by the anti-graft agency on charges relating to money laundering and
the breach of the Procurement Act. These charges were connected to the
disbursement of N2.1 billion from the office of the National Security Adviser,
led by Colonel Mohammed Sambo Dasuki. Despite these challenges, Dokpesi’s faith
in justice prevailed, as he was ultimately discharged and acquitted by the
Court of Appeal in Abuja on April 1, 2021.

Throughout his career, Dokpesi also held significant
positions in various government parastatals. Notably, he worked at the Federal
Ministry of Transport and Aviation as the Head of the Water Transport Division
on secondment from the Nigerian Ports Plc between 1978 and 1983. This
experience allowed him to contribute his expertise to the nation’s
transportation sector.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Dokpesi was
honored with the National Honour of the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR)
in 2008, a testament to his dedication and impact on the nation.

Dokpesi’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident in his
establishment of the first indigenous shipping line in Nigeria. This
achievement revolutionized the country’s maritime industry, creating
opportunities for growth and development.

Despite his notable accomplishments, Dokpesi faced personal
health challenges. During the global COVID-19 pandemic, he contracted the
virus, adding yet another obstacle to his path. However, Dokpesi’s resilience
shone through as he fought and overcame the illness, inspiring others with his
determination and perseverance.

Raymond Anthony Aleogho Dokpesi’s story is one of
perseverance, innovation, and dedication. From his humble beginnings to
becoming a trailblazer in the media industry, he has left an indelible mark on
Nigeria’s media landscape, public service, and entrepreneurial endeavors. His
contributions continue to shape the nation and inspire generations to come.
