In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has given
his approval for the appointment of
Retired Assistant Inspector General of
Police, Hakeem Odumosu, as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This decision marks a crucial step in the
fight against economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
Hakeem Odumosu, a distinguished retired police officer,
brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position. Having previously
served as the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, his appointment is now
subject to confirmation by the Senate, where his qualifications and suitability
for the role will be thoroughly reviewed.
The new appointment comes as a result of the suspension of
Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former Chairman of the EFCC, by President Tinubu. Bawa’s
suspension was enacted to enable a comprehensive investigation into allegations
of abuse of power that had been leveled against him. President Tinubu’s
commitment to upholding the integrity and effectiveness of the EFCC is evident
in this decisive action.
Hakeem Odumosu’s retirement from the Nigeria Police Force
occurred in January 2022, shortly after his well-deserved promotion to the rank
of Assistant Inspector General (AIG). With a distinguished career spanning 32
years, his contributions to law enforcement have been commendable and
recognized. During his tenure, he notably served as the inaugural chairman of
the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit
(Taskforce), where he played a vital role in maintaining order and combating
various environmental offenses.
Furthermore, Odumosu also served as the Commander of the
State-funded Rapid Response Squad (RRS), an elite unit responsible for
responding swiftly to emergencies and ensuring public safety. Under his
leadership, the RRS achieved significant successes in tackling crime and
protecting the lives and property of the residents of Lagos State.
With his extensive experience in law enforcement and his
proven dedication to public service, Hakeem Odumosu is poised to lead the EFCC
in its vital mission of combating economic and financial crimes. His appointment
reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to selecting competent and capable
individuals to spearhead critical institutions and bolster the country’s
anti-corruption efforts.
As the process of confirmation unfolds in the Senate,
Nigerians eagerly anticipate the outcome, recognizing the significance of this
appointment in the ongoing fight against corruption and the promotion of
transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s public sphere.
