President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement of additional military hardware to reinforce the capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in ongoing operations against insurgents and terrorist groups across the country.
The development was disclosed on Thursday by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, after a high-level security briefing with the President.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Musa said the session allowed Nigeria’s service chiefs to present detailed updates on current military operations and the overall security situation nationwide.
“The meeting enabled Mr. President to gain direct insight into developments on the ground,” he said.
According to the defence minister, recent media reports have not fully reflected the scale of ongoing military activities aimed at combating security threats in various parts of the country.
He acknowledged that some areas had recently experienced attacks but noted that troops have continued to respond strongly, inflicting heavy losses on terrorist groups during several operations.
Musa added that a number of high-ranking militant commanders had been eliminated in recent offensives, while troops also recovered weapons and other assets belonging to insurgents.
The minister paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in the course of operations, describing their sacrifice as painful but honourable. He emphasised that the commitment of Nigeria’s armed forces to protecting citizens remains resolute.
“The commitment of our Armed Forces to ensuring the safety and security of Nigerians is unwavering,” he said.
Musa also appealed for public patience and support, explaining that insurgent groups often increase their activities during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
He noted that military commanders had already adjusted operational strategies to counter the pattern.
The defence minister expressed optimism that the approval for additional military equipment, combined with improved coordination among security agencies, would strengthen Nigeria’s ability to defeat terrorism.
“Our agencies are working in concert, fully committed to winning this war,” he added.
