President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that Nigeria has secured military collaboration from France, including equipment and operational support, as part of renewed efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity across the country.
Tinubu made the disclosure on Sunday during a meeting with state governors at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, following his recent diplomatic engagements abroad. He revealed that the agreement was reached after a detailed discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“I can report to you… at a lengthy discussion with Emmanuel Macron, their collaboration with us for equipment and support,” Tinubu said, adding that his administration is actively engaging other nations for similar partnerships.
The President noted that Nigeria is prepared to utilise its international goodwill and existing credit lines to secure advanced military equipment and training for its security forces.
Describing insecurity as a critical challenge facing the nation, Tinubu urged collective action to overcome terrorism and criminal activities threatening national stability.
“The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity in this country,” he said. “We must ensure that collectively we achieve victory over tyranny.”
The meeting, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also addressed economic concerns, with Tinubu warning that ongoing tensions in the Middle East could trigger inflation and affect purchasing power in Nigeria.
He called on governors to prioritise support for vulnerable populations, stressing the need for stronger social interventions amid economic pressures.
Tinubu further expressed condolences to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum over recent deadly attacks in Maiduguri, urging swift engagement with affected communities.
Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security threats, including insurgency by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province in the North-East, as well as banditry, kidnapping, and separatist unrest in other regions.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in modern technology, intelligence, and logistics to strengthen counter-terrorism operations nationwide.
The announcement follows Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, where he held talks with Keir Starmer and King Charles III, focusing on expanding security cooperation and trade relations between both countries.
