In a managerial shake-up, Birmingham announced the appointment of Tony Mowbray as their new manager on Monday, stepping in to replace the ousted Wayne Rooney. The former Sunderland and West Brom boss has inked a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Championship strugglers, becoming Birmingham’s third manager this season following the dismissals of John Eustace and Rooney.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Mowbray stated, “I am excited to be joining Birmingham at this time. I can’t wait to get back on the training pitch and start working with this talented group of players.” Mowbray, who brings a wealth of experience to the position, is eager to tap into the potential of the team.
Acknowledging the passionate fanbase, Mowbray added, “I know from personal experience how passionate Bluenoses are, home and away, and I’m looking forward to having their full support for the team starting on Saturday at home to Swansea.”
The managerial shift comes after Mowbray’s departure from Sunderland in December, where he spent 15 months at the helm but was relieved of his duties despite guiding the team to the play-offs last season.
Rooney, the former Manchester United and England star, faced an abrupt exit from Birmingham after a mere 83 days in charge. Taking over from Eustace in October, Rooney’s tenure saw the team struggle, managing only two wins in 15 games as Birmingham slipped from sixth in the Championship to the 20th position. The decision to bring in Mowbray signals Birmingham’s commitment to turning around their fortunes under new leadership.
