A tragic auto accident has claimed the lives of three student leaders from the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), including the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Director of Sports, Comrade Solomon Nya.
The fatal crash occurred on the evening of May 1 in Odukpani, located on the outskirts of Calabar, leaving several others seriously injured. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the impact was severe, with multiple victims sustaining life-threatening injuries.
According to a source who spoke shortly after the incident, the SUG President was left unconscious and rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where he is currently receiving emergency medical care. “He is in critical condition, and we are hoping he pulls through,” the source said.
The eyewitness further revealed the extent of the devastation, noting that some victims, including female students, suffered severe injuries such as limb amputations. The bodies of those who died at the scene, including the Director of Sports, have been deposited at the UCTH mortuary.
As of the time of filing this report, the university authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The delay is believed to be due to the public holiday observed on Friday, followed by the weekend.
The incident has cast a somber mood over the university community, with students and staff expressing grief over the loss of young lives and praying for the recovery of those injured.
