A mining site collapse in Plateau State has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, leaving the community of Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) in mourning. The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, was confirmed by Bassa LGA Chairman, Dr. Joshua Riti, in a statement to journalists on Monday in Jos.
The mining site, located at the boundary between Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, reportedly caved in unexpectedly, trapping miners who were seeking a livelihood through local mining activities. Seven of the victims were identified as residents of Bassa, with many of the deceased falling within the age range of 18 to 30, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Chairman Riti expressed profound sorrow over the devastating incident, noting the economic pressures driving these young individuals to seek employment in mining. “This is an unfortunate incident; these young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood,” he said. “They were using their strength and skills to sustain themselves amidst the current economic hardships but tragically lost their lives in the process. My deepest condolences go out to their families and loved ones.”
The collapse has highlighted the perilous conditions often faced by miners in the region, with limited safety measures in place at many informal mining sites. Local authorities are assessing the incident and considering measures to prevent further tragedies.
As the affected families and the community at large grapple with this loss, officials are reportedly discussing initiatives to improve the safety standards of mining activities in the area.
