Donald Trump is set to embark on an extraordinary second state visit to the United Kingdom this week, as the country prepares to deploy royal grandeur and historic ceremony to charm the unpredictable Donald Trump and reinforce its cherished “special relationship” with the United States.
The 79-year-old U.S. president will be welcomed with full royal honours, including a carriage procession alongside King Charles III, a military jet flyover, and a grand state banquet at Windsor Castle. He will also be received by Prince William and Princess Catherine, before paying a private visit to the grave of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
According to British officials, the state visit is designed to appeal to Trump’s long-documented fascination with the monarchy — rooted in his Scottish heritage and his admiration for royal pageantry. Trump has previously spoken fondly of his 2019 state visit during his first term and will now become the first U.S. president in history to be granted a second state visit to the UK.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who personally delivered King Charles’s invitation to Trump at the White House in February, is expected to host the American leader for high-stakes talks at his countryside retreat, Chequers. Discussions will focus on a proposed landmark U.S.-UK tech partnership, a major civil nuclear deal, trade and tariff policies, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Starmer, who has worked to build rapport with Trump despite their ideological differences, described the occasion as “truly historic and unprecedented.” Trump, in turn, praised King Charles as a “great, great gentleman,” acknowledging the monarch’s ongoing cancer treatment while accepting the invitation.
Security will be tight, with most events staged outside London to avoid large-scale protests expected to be held in the capital.
The visit, combining royal spectacle with political strategy, is seen as a critical diplomatic opportunity for Britain to strengthen ties with Washington, reassure its allies, and secure favourable economic deals as Trump reshapes global politics from the White House once again.
