Trump Warns Moscow of Fresh Sanctions After Russia Launches Record Airstrikes on Ukraine

Tensions escalated sharply on Sunday as U.S. President Donald Trump threatened new sanctions against Russia following Moscow’s largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the conflict began more than three years ago.

The overnight bombardment saw Russian forces unleash at least 810 drones and 13 missiles across Ukraine, killing four people and injuring dozens, according to Ukrainian officials. Among the casualties was a pregnant woman in Kyiv, who delivered a premature baby shortly after the attack, with doctors battling to save both lives.

Massive explosions shook the capital as flames engulfed the cabinet of ministers’ building — the first time the seat of Ukraine’s government had been directly struck. Drone strikes also damaged multiple high-rise apartment blocks, leaving residents scrambling for safety. Emergency crews battled through the night to extinguish fires and rescue trapped civilians.

Speaking to reporters, President Trump described the situation as “deeply troubling” and said Washington was prepared to escalate pressure on Moscow. “We are not happy with the whole situation, and we are looking at sanctions — serious ones,” he warned.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the U.S. and its allies to deliver a “strong” and coordinated response, insisting that President Vladimir Putin was “testing the world.” In his nightly address, Zelensky said: “It is important that there is a broad response from partners to this attack today. We cannot allow Russia to normalise terror.”

Russia, however, denied striking civilian sites. The defense ministry claimed its forces targeted only a logistics hub and an industrial plant in Kyiv, insisting “no strikes were carried out on other targets within the city.”

Still, international outrage was swift. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the strikes as acts of “terror,” pledging to help Ukraine bolster its defenses. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer labelled the attacks “cowardly,” while European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen accused Moscow of “mocking diplomacy.”

The assault comes just weeks after Trump’s mid-August meeting with Putin failed to secure a breakthrough on a ceasefire. Since then, Russia has intensified attacks, while continuing its grinding push on the battlefield. The Kremlin now controls nearly 20 percent of Ukrainian territory, according to Western intelligence.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled that Washington was considering harsher economic penalties, including tariffs on nations purchasing Russian oil. “The Russian economy will be in full collapse, and that will bring President Putin to the table,” he told NBC.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s foreign ministry highlighted that even animals were not spared, reporting that seven horses were killed at an equestrian club during the strikes. “The world cannot stand aside while a terrorist state takes lives — human or animal — every single day,” the ministry posted on X.

The latest escalation comes amid European discussions over long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. More than two dozen European nations have pledged to oversee any eventual peace agreement, with some expressing willingness to deploy troops — a move Putin has branded unacceptable and a “legitimate target.”

As the war grinds on with mounting casualties, the humanitarian toll continues to rise. Tens of thousands have died, millions have fled their homes, and Ukraine’s shattered cities remain under constant threat. For Zelensky, the message is clear: only stronger Western action can shift the balance.
