In a significant move, the United Kingdom has pledged a substantial £245 million ($311 million) defence package aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s artillery ammunition production. The announcement comes on the heels of the two-year mark since the outbreak of war with Russia.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps underscored Ukraine’s remarkable efforts in reclaiming territories seized by Russia since the invasion in 2022. He emphasized the critical role of international support in Ukraine’s fight for victory.
The newly allocated funds will be utilized to procure and revitalize supply chains to produce urgently needed artillery ammunition, as outlined by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Ukraine’s effective use of artillery has been pivotal in its battlefield successes, continuously impeding Russia’s advances.
In addition to the financial support, Shapps confirmed the delivery of 200 Brimstone anti-tank missiles, with the total reaching over 1,300. Furthermore, the UK will co-lead an international coalition to provide thousands of drones to Ukraine.
While the exact military toll on Ukraine remains undisclosed, US officials estimate significant casualties, with thousands killed and injured. Russia, too, has suffered losses, but its ability to replenish forces remains robust.
On the occasion of the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the UK also announced £8.5 million in humanitarian funding. This allocation will support the Red Cross Movement and the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund, aiding in emergency responses and humanitarian assistance across Ukraine.
Approximately £6 million will bolster the Red Cross Movement’s impartial work, while £2.5 million will contribute to the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund, operated by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
This commitment underscores the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.
