The United States Embassy in Nigeria has introduced updates to its immigrant visa application process, requiring applicants to visit the Consulate General in Lagos twice during the procedure. This new directive will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Announcing the changes via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the embassy stated:
“For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, visits to the Consulate General in Lagos will now occur at least twice during the immigrant visa process. This new process is designed to help you prepare for your visa interview and prevent significant delays in processing your immigrant visa.”
Breakdown of the New Procedure
According to information provided on the embassy’s website, the updated process consists of two mandatory visits:
- In-Person Document Review
The first visit involves a detailed review of applicants’ documents by consular staff.
-
- This step ensures that all required documents are in order and provides applicants an opportunity to address any deficiencies before their scheduled interview.
- The embassy emphasized that this phase is crucial to preventing delays caused by incomplete or missing paperwork.
- Visa Interview
The second visit is the actual visa interview, conducted by a Consular Officer.
-
- This appointment will be scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC).
- Applicants who fail to complete the In-Person Document Review prior to the interview will be required to reschedule their appointments.
The embassy noted that these changes are aimed at enhancing efficiency and minimizing processing delays, thereby improving the overall applicant experience.
Transition to New Visa Services Provider
In a related announcement, the embassy reiterated its earlier notification regarding the transition to a new visa services provider for its Abuja and Lagos consulates. The change, which was announced on August 26, 2024, is part of ongoing efforts to streamline visa services across its operations in Nigeria.
Applicant Advisory
The U.S. Embassy encourages all applicants to carefully review their application guidelines and prepare thoroughly for both visits to the consulate. These procedural updates reflect the embassy’s commitment to reducing inefficiencies and ensuring a smoother application process for Nigerians seeking immigrant visas to the United States.
