The United States Embassy in Abuja and the United States Consulate General in Lagos have announced they will suspend operations on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
The diplomatic mission disclosed this in a notice posted on its official X handle on Sunday, informing the public of the temporary closure.
According to the mission, Presidents’ Day was initially created to mark the birthday of George Washington but has since evolved into a national holiday celebrating all American presidents and their contributions to the nation’s development.
The embassy further explained that the federal holiday also acknowledges the role of U.S. presidents in shaping global affairs.
In a related post, the mission highlighted a historical milestone attributed to Washington, noting that he established the “Badge of Military Merit,” which later evolved into the Purple Heart. The decoration, it added, still features Washington’s likeness.
Presidents’ Day is observed annually across the United States as a federal public holiday.
