The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American diplomatic facilities and schools affiliated with the United States in the country.
In the advisory released late Monday, the embassy urged U.S. citizens in Nigeria to heighten their security awareness and take precautionary measures, particularly when visiting the U.S. Embassy Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos, as well as institutions linked to the United States.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the advisory stated.
The mission advised American nationals to exercise increased vigilance and adopt security measures aimed at reducing risks, including varying travel routes and schedules when visiting diplomatic locations or related institutions.
“The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when travelling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated schools, including varying times and routes,” the statement added.
According to the advisory, maintaining heightened awareness of surroundings and avoiding predictable routines could significantly reduce personal risk.
The embassy also encouraged citizens to review their personal security plans and remain alert in public places.
Among the recommended safety measures were keeping a low profile, ensuring mobile phones remain charged in case of emergencies, avoiding large gatherings and demonstrations, and familiarising themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings.
American nationals were also advised to stay informed about security developments and travel risks in Nigeria by consulting official guidance available on the U.S. government’s travel advisory website.
Despite the security alert, the embassy confirmed that consular services remain operational at both diplomatic missions.
“The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open,” the statement said, urging U.S. citizens to continue monitoring official communication channels for updates.
