The US Men’s National Team faced an unexpected setback, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal second leg. Despite this, the US team managed to secure a spot in the semifinals with a 4-2 aggregate victory.
The match began on a positive note for the US, with Fulham defender Antonee Robinson scoring a goal after 25 minutes. However, the game took a turn when Sergiño Dest received two yellow cards within 30 seconds for kicking the ball into the stands in frustration and displaying disrespectful behavior towards the referee. Dest, who assisted in Robinson’s goal, later apologized on social media, acknowledging his actions as “unacceptable, selfish, and immature.”
US captain Tim Ream expressed bewilderment at Dest’s reaction, citing a lack of respect for teammates, the game, and referees. Despite Dest’s red card, Trinidad and Tobago seized the opportunity and secured a 2-1 victory with goals from Reon Moore and Alvin Jones. However, the US had already won the first leg in Texas with a score of 3-0, ensuring their progression to the semifinals.
Trinidad and Tobago will now participate in a single-elimination match to determine whether they qualify among the six CONCACAF teams for the 2024 Copa América, integrated into this year’s CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers.
