Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Sunday departed Abuja for New York, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The week-long gathering of world leaders, diplomats, and policymakers is scheduled to hold from Monday, September 22, to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
According to a statement by Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level general debates, outlining the country’s position on global peace, security, and development.
The vice-president will also participate in a series of sideline engagements, including high-level roundtables and bilateral meetings with international partners aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic relations.
Significantly, Shettima is expected to unveil Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Climate Agreement. This will reaffirm the country’s commitment to climate action, clean energy transition, and sustainable development.
Nigeria’s delegation to the UNGA is also expected to engage global stakeholders on investment opportunities, security partnerships, and humanitarian support for conflict-affected regions.
The UN General Assembly, the largest annual diplomatic event in the world, provides member states with a platform to discuss pressing global challenges ranging from climate change and conflicts to health and economic recovery.
