LAGOS — Popular Nollywood actress Annie Macaulay on Sunday night publicly confirmed her divorce from legendary Nigerian musician Innocent “2Baba” Idibia during the 17th edition of the Headies Awards.
The announcement, subtle yet unmistakable, came as Annie took the stage at the event alongside Farooq Oreagba — the celebrated “King of Steeze” from the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival — to present the award for Best Afrobeat Singer of the Year. While introducing herself, Annie stumbled slightly, inadvertently starting with her married name before quickly correcting herself and affirming her return to her maiden identity.
“Annie Idi… Oh! Sorry, Annie Macaulay. Hey, single ladies!” she exclaimed, drawing loud cheers and applause from the packed audience.
The moment served as the actress’s first public acknowledgment of the end of her marriage, following months of silence and speculation. Although hints had emerged earlier this year — notably when Annie resurfaced on social media in March, signing off with her full maiden name, Annie Uwana Macaulay — she had until now avoided any verbal confirmation.
Annie and 2Baba, who share two daughters together, officially finalized their divorce in January 2025. The separation was first made public by 2Baba himself, who cited irreconcilable differences in a heartfelt announcement that caught many fans off guard after over a decade of a high-profile relationship marked by both adoration and turbulence.
Since the split, developments in 2Baba’s personal life have continued to attract attention. The music star is now engaged to Natasha Osawaru, a prominent lawmaker from Edo State. In a traditional ceremony earlier this year, 2Baba introduced Natasha to his family and kinsmen in Benue State, further fueling speculation about an imminent wedding.
Despite the end of their marriage, both Annie and 2Baba have maintained public decorum, avoiding any bitter exchanges. Annie’s spirited acknowledgment at the Headies reflects a personal turning point, signalling her readiness to embrace a new chapter, both personally and professionally.
The 17th Headies Awards, known for celebrating excellence in African music, became an unexpected backdrop for this deeply personal revelation, blending the world of entertainment with real-life milestones.
