Chelsea Football Club has announced that a portion of the bonuses earned from their FIFA Club World Cup triumph will be donated to the family of late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.
The Blues clinched the title in the newly expanded tournament on July 13, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The victory reportedly netted Chelsea approximately $114.6 million (£84.4 million) in prize money.
According to The Athletic, $15.5 million (£11.4 million) of the winnings was earmarked for players who featured under head coach Enzo Maresca during the competition. In a unanimous decision, the club and its squad agreed to donate an equal share — valued at over $500,000 before taxes and other deductions — to Jota’s family.
The gesture comes in the wake of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 27-year-old Jota and his younger brother Silva, a player for Portuguese side Penafiel, in Spain’s Zamora province on July 3, just ten days before Chelsea’s World Cup victory.
Liverpool Football Club, Jota’s team until his passing, has also unveiled a series of tributes in his honour. These include a memorial sculpture at Anfield, a “Forever 20” emblem on all players’ kits for the 2025/26 season, and the creation of a grassroots football initiative through the LFC Foundation to promote youth development in his name.
Chelsea’s contribution adds to the wave of condolences and support pouring in from across the football world, underscoring the sport’s unity in moments of profound loss.
