The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a call for heightened security awareness among Muslims and the general public during the Eid-el-Kabir festivities. The advisory emphasizes the importance of caution and adherence to personal security protocols during religious and social activities.
In a statement released on Saturday, Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the DSS, underscored the need for operators and patrons of public venues such as malls, parks, and railway stations to implement and follow stringent security measures to ensure public safety.
The statement, titled ‘Eid-el-Kabir: DSS Cautions Celebrants to Be Vigilant’, reads: “It is strongly advised that while engaging in religious and social activities during the period, celebrants should be cautious and observe all necessary personal security procedures. Similarly, operators and patrons of malls, fun places, markets, parks, and railway stations, among others, are to be vigilant and ensure strict compliance with physical and other security measures required for public safety. They should promptly report suspected movements or breaches to appropriate law enforcement authorities.”
Afunanya assured the public that the DSS would work in close collaboration with other security agencies to protect lives and property during the celebrations. He stated, “The service will maintain close collaboration with sister security agencies and other critical stakeholders to ensure smooth and hitch-free celebrations. Meanwhile, the website, dss.gov.ng; email address – dsspr@dss.gov.ng, and telephone lines +2349153391309; +2349088373514 will remain available to the public who may wish to contact the Service during and after the holidays.”
The DSS also extended warm wishes to the Muslim community on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir. Afunanya said, “The Director General, Management, and Staff of the DSS wish to felicitate the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of Eid-Al-Adha. While the event is significant for the opportunity it offers for prayers and celebrations, it reminds us of the importance of faith, obedience, and generosity. Accordingly, all citizens are enjoined to emulate these characteristics as bases for national transformation and unity. Everyone is urged to show love, not only to their neighbours but to the country at large.”
In related news, the Federal Government has declared Monday and Tuesday as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government, extending congratulations to Muslims both in Nigeria and the diaspora. The minister’s statement, conveyed by Permanent Secretary Aishetu Ndayako, encouraged Muslims to embody the values of peace, kindness, and sacrifice exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim.
