Edo Muslim Group Urges Okpebholo to Reverse Policy on Missionary School Handover

A prominent Muslim group in Edo State has appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to reverse his recent decision to return some public schools to their original missionary owners, warning that the move could ignite religious tensions and threaten educational inclusivity.

The Association of Muslim Professionals in Edo, in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its chairman, Madu Mammadi, expressed deep concern over the policy, despite commending the governor’s leadership since assuming office in November 2024.

“We write on behalf of our members to appreciate your good work since assuming office,” the statement read. “We have supported your SHINE Agenda wholeheartedly and acknowledge your efforts in transforming Edo. However, the policy to return public schools to churches is troubling and could be detrimental to social harmony.”

Governor Okpebholo recently approved the return of some state-run schools to their founding missionary institutions, citing historical continuity and improved management as reasons. But the Muslim group argues that such a move, while historically grounded, risks polarising the state along religious lines.

“The return of public schools to churches could deepen religious divisions among Edo people and damage the peaceful coexistence we have enjoyed for years,” Mammadi said. “This policy, if enforced, may trigger tensions that could spiral beyond control, especially in a diverse and multi-faith state like ours.”

The association pointed out that many of the lands on which these schools were built were donated by predominantly Muslim communities, emphasizing that the institutions were later developed with public funds from both Christian and Muslim taxpayers. They further reminded the government that some schools—such as the former Muslim Secondary School near the Central Park—were initiated by Muslim communities, not churches.

According to the group, reverting ownership to churches could alienate Muslim students and families, potentially reducing access to quality education and eroding the sense of shared ownership over public institutions.

“This move could marginalise approximately 40% of the state’s Muslim population and discourage equal access to public education,” Mammadi warned.

The association called on the governor to put the interest of unity, equity, and public trust above historical sentiment. They offered to participate in stakeholder consultations or public hearings to reach a more inclusive resolution.

“We urge Your Excellency to reconsider this decision and consult widely with all religious and community leaders before implementing such a far-reaching policy,” the statement concluded.

The governor is yet to publicly respond to the concerns raised by the Muslim group.
