The Northern
Elders Forum (NEF) has emphasized the trust Nigerians have in the Judiciary to
deliver impartial judgments as different political parties, individuals, and
interest groups approach the courts
seeking redress over the election outcomes.
Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the NEF’s Director of Publicity and Advocacy, cautioned
party leaders to control their spokespersons from making inflammatory
statements and exchanges.
The Forum
welcomes the decision of contestants who feel the elections did not meet legal
standards to seek adjudication over its credibility and resolve other
constitutional issues related to it. It also stressed the need for credible,
free, and fair elections and a peaceful transition from the current
administration to the next.
While the Forum
follows the elections’ conduct, it is concerned about the language and
exchanges that fuel negative dispositions and raise tensions that threaten
inter-community relations. It also expressed concerns that leaders are not
encouraging respect for the judicial process, a crucial aspect of the electoral
process.
The Forum
appeals to Nigerians to allow the judiciary to undertake its critical
responsibility under a peaceful atmosphere. Party leaders should restrain their
spokespersons from making damaging statements and exchanges. The statement
reminded the Nigerian judiciary that Nigerians rely on it to salvage democracy
and restore Nigerians’ faith in its integrity and competence in handling all
election matters.

the statement notes that Nigeria must survive these elections and strive to
conduct elections that improve the standards of quality and strengthen the
foundations of peaceful coexistence.
