Andreas Brehme, the renowned footballer celebrated for his pivotal penalty goal that secured victory for West Germany in the 1990 World Cup final against Argentina, has passed away at the age of 63, announced his former club Bayern Munich.
In a statement released by Bayern Munich, the club expressed deep shock over Brehme’s sudden demise, remembering him not only as a world champion but also as a cherished individual who left an indelible mark on the footballing community.
A versatile left-back, Brehme contributed his talent to Bayern Munich for two seasons from 1986 to 1988. Throughout his illustrious career, he showcased his skills for various clubs including Saarbruecken, Kaiserslautern, Inter Milan, and Real Zaragoza.
Having represented his nation 86 times and scoring eight goals, Brehme etched his name in football history with his unforgettable 85th-minute penalty against Argentina, clinching West Germany’s third World Cup title at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
Kaiserslautern, where Brehme enjoyed a decade-long tenure over two spells, expressed their intent to honor his memory, acknowledging his significant contributions to the club’s success in Bundesliga and the German Cup.
Inter Milan, Brehme’s former club, paid tribute to the legendary player, describing him as a “magnificent player” and extending heartfelt condolences. Italian football giants also recalled his enduring legacy, reminiscing about his time alongside national teammates Juergen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthaeus.
In a solemn gesture, Inter Milan announced that their players would don black armbands as a mark of respect for Brehme during their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid later that day.
Brehme’s passing follows closely after the loss of another German football icon, Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away in January. Beckenbauer, who led West Germany to victory as manager in the 1990 World Cup, left an indelible imprint on the sport.
The news of Brehme’s demise has cast a pall over the footballing world, with Pierre Littbarski, a fellow member of the 1990 World Cup-winning team, expressing profound sadness for the loss, describing it as a poignant moment for German football and the cherished memories they shared.
