As tensions between Israel and Hamas escalate, the Gaza Strip is teetering on the edge of a looming humanitarian catastrophe, warn local authorities. Israel’s latest move to declare a “complete siege” on the territory, including the cutoff of electricity, food, fuel, and water supplies, has raised alarm bells.
Reports indicate that aid deliveries to Gaza have ground to a halt since Saturday, leaving its residents in dire straits. BBC footage vividly portrays the grim aftermath of Israeli airstrikes, with deserted streets strewn with rubble from buildings reduced to ruins.
The reprisal attacks have tragically claimed the lives of more than 500 individuals, as the conflict continues to exact a devastating toll on the enclave. Gaza, home to approximately 2.3 million people, sees a staggering 80% of its population relying on humanitarian aid, primarily due to the persistent hostilities with Israel.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, announced the “complete siege” on Gaza, leaving no room for essential resources like electricity, food, water, and gas. Gallant characterized their approach as necessary when dealing with what he referred to as “animals,” suggesting a harsh stance in the ongoing conflict.
In a subsequent move, the Israeli Infrastructure Minister ordered the immediate cessation of water supplies to Gaza, signaling a dire escalation of the situation. The Minister’s statement, “What was in the past will no longer be in the future,” underscores the gravity of the situation.
Amidst these developments, Hamas, through the spokesperson of its armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigade, issued a chilling threat. They warned that civilian hostages would be executed, with the killings broadcasted, if Israel continued to target individuals in Gaza without prior warning. The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides locked in a dangerous standoff, and the international community closely monitoring the unfolding crisis.
