Israeli Student Charged with Espionage in Alleged Plot for Iran

Israeli authorities have arrested a 22-year-old university student suspected of spying for Iran and committing multiple security-related offences within Israeli territory, according to a joint statement released Thursday by Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency, and the Israel Police.

The suspect, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, is a resident of Deir al-Asad, an Arab village in northern Israel, and is currently enrolled in Information Systems studies at Ben Gurion University in Beersheba. The young man was taken into custody in June, and security officials say he will soon face formal charges.

Authorities allege that the student had maintained prolonged contact with an Iranian intelligence operative over the course of several months. During this period, he is believed to have received payments in exchange for carrying out a number of activities that the Shin Bet has labeled as “security-related acts” intended to destabilize internal security and incite civil discord.

Among the specific acts he is accused of performing under Iranian direction were:

  • Attempting to injure an individual (whose identity has not been disclosed),
  • Scattering nails on a major road in Beersheba, potentially endangering drivers and public safety,
  • Spreading divisive messages to stir tensions within Israeli society.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that his actions were fueled by solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, a sentiment that may have been exploited by Iranian handlers, according to intelligence officials.

While the exact timing of his arrest remains uncertain, officials have not confirmed whether it occurred prior to or during the recent 12-day escalation between Israel and Iran. However, his detention has now been made public amid heightened concerns over Iranian espionage activity targeting Israeli infrastructure and institutions.

This case is part of a growing pattern. In recent years, Shin Bet has reported several instances of Israeli citizens, often of Arab descent, being approached by Iranian agents through encrypted messaging platforms or social media. These operatives, officials say, typically seek to recruit individuals to gather intelligence, incite unrest, or execute low-level sabotage in exchange for financial rewards.

Security experts note that universities and research institutions have increasingly become soft targets for foreign intelligence agencies, particularly those with cyber capabilities or technological assets, such as in this case where the student had a background in information systems.

Israeli authorities have not disclosed the name of the Iranian agent allegedly involved, nor the broader scope of the suspected espionage ring. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.

As tensions between Israel and Iran remain high—especially following recent military confrontations and cyberattacks—security officials have vowed to remain vigilant against what they describe as Iran’s evolving tactics of proxy warfare and digital recruitment.

Further details are expected as legal proceedings unfold.
