Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly held discussions about joining a consortium seeking to acquire a minority stake in Premier League champions Liverpool.
According to reports on Wednesday, the investment group is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. While Bezos has explored the proposal, reports indicate he has not yet decided whether to participate in the potential investment.
Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed on Tuesday that Bhatia’s consortium had approached the club regarding the purchase of a minority stake.
Bezos, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at approximately $257 billion (£192 billion), has previously been linked with potential investments in major American sports franchises, including the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but ultimately did not pursue either opportunity.
Bhatia’s interest in Liverpool coincided with his departure from the board of Championship club Queens Park Rangers, ending an 18-year association after transferring his stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.
FSG previously sold a minority interest in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty in 2023, and any agreement with Bhatia’s consortium is expected to follow a similar structure rather than involve a full takeover.
The Financial Times reported that a deal with the consortium would value Liverpool at more than $6 billion, reflecting the club’s continued commercial growth under FSG, which acquired the Reds in 2010 for £300 million.
