Liverpool FC has officially submitted its Premier League retained list following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, confirming the departure of several key senior and Academy players.
The club announced that “Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are set to leave the Reds upon the expiry of their contracts this summer, following eight and four years respectively with the club,” as stated in a Wednesday release on the club’s website. The club lauded the contributions of both players during their tenures.
“Centre-back Matip surpassed 200 appearances during his time on Merseyside, scoring 11 goals and claiming seven honors – including Champions League and Premier League glory. Thiago, meanwhile, featured 98 times after his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2020, the midfielder lifting the Emirates FA Cup and FA Community Shield along the way,” the statement added.
Academy graduate Adam Lewis, who spent the past two seasons on loan with Newport County, will also be departing at the end of his contract. “The Scouser progressed all the way through the Reds’ youth ranks having first joined at U6 level and achieved his senior debut by playing the whole of the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield in February 2020,” noted the club.
Additionally, Melkamu Frauendorf is set to leave Liverpool this summer. The attacking midfielder frequently played for the U18s and U21s and made two senior appearances during his four years with the club. “Frauendorf debuted under Jürgen Klopp as a substitute versus Shrewsbury in the FA Cup in January 2022 and later that year started the Carabao Cup clash with Derby County at Anfield,” the statement read.
Mateusz Musialowski will also be moving on, having made his first senior Liverpool appearance as a substitute against Sparta Prague in March. The Poland youth international joined the club in the summer of 2020 and was a regular member of the U18s and U21s squads over the past four years.
At the Academy level, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne, and Cody Pennington will all depart following the expiration of their contracts.
Meanwhile, the club has extended contract offers to senior goalkeeper Adrian, who has made 26 appearances since joining in August 2019, as well as Academy goalkeepers Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman.
“Everyone at Liverpool FC thanks Joel, Thiago, Adam, Melkamu, Mateusz, Nathan, Francis, Luke, Niall, and Cody for all their contributions and wishes them each the very best for the future,” the statement concluded.
In related news, reports indicate that the Reds have recently announced Arne Slot as their new head coach, succeeding Jürgen Klopp.
