
In a stunning display of athleticism and skill, Nigerian wrestlers emerged victorious at the ongoing African Games in Ghana, clinching an impressive array of gold medals across multiple categories.
The triumph began with Mercy Genesis securing Nigeria’s first wrestling gold in the 50kg category, setting the stage for a remarkable performance by Team Nigeria. Led by Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu, the female wrestlers showcased their prowess by clinching gold in all five events.
Oborodudu led by example as team captain, defeating Blandine Nyeh Ngiri of Cameroon with a commanding score of 14-4. She was followed by Odunayo Adekuoroye, who triumphed over Zineb Hassoune of Morocco with a decisive pinfall.
Not to be outdone, Commonwealth champion Mercy Genesis delivered a dominant performance against Mohamed Nada of Egypt, securing victory with a flawless 7-0 scoreline. African Games debutant Ogunsanya Christiana continued the winning streak, overpowering her opponent Nogona Bakayoko of Cote d’Ivoire with a resounding 11-0 victory.
The celebrations continued with Hannah Reuben’s triumph over Amy Youin of Cote d’Ivoire, adding another gold medal to Nigeria’s tally. President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, commended the team’s dedication and hard work, attributing their success to their relentless training and commitment.
Igali expressed his gratitude to the female wrestlers for their outstanding performance and also extended thanks to the Governor of Bayelsa, Douye Diri, for his unwavering support of the athletes.
Meanwhile, in a separate event, Nigerian badminton champion Anioluwapo Opeyori clinched both gold and silver medals in the badminton competition, further adding to Nigeria’s achievements at the Games.
In response to the athletes’ stellar performances, Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, congratulated them and their coaches, urging them to maintain their focus and dedication. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the advancement of sports in all its forms, promising continued support for Nigerian athletes on their quest for excellence.
