A group of Northern Elders, known as the
Convention of Arewa Elders, has demanded the arrest of Peter Obi, the Labour Party
presidential candidate, by security operatives. The Elders are insisting that
nothing must stop the inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the next President
of Nigeria on May 29, 2023.
The coalition has accused Peter Obi and his
running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, of making inciteful statements that could
disrupt Nigeria’s democratic system. The Elders claim that Obi engaged in a
very divisive ethnoreligious campaign during the 2023 elections and has
continued to promote civil disobedience after losing in the presidential
election.
The group’s communique, read by the Chairman
of Gamji Heritage, Alhaji Suleiman Usman Jere, states that the Elders are
particularly worried about the pronouncements of Peter Obi, Datti Ahmed, and
other Labour Party leaders linked to terrorist organizations like IPOB and ESN.
The Elders are calling on security agencies to be alive to their
responsibilities and to arrest anyone calling for the truncation of Nigeria’s
democracy by any means.
The Northern Elders have vowed to protect their votes and
remain committed to the May 29th swearing-in date of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
in line with Nigeria’s constitutional provisions. The Elders, led by Major
General Mohammed Sani Saleh (rtd), have also stated that calls for an Interim
National Government are strange to the constitution and must be resisted by
well-meaning Nigerians. They emphasize that the Nigerian Constitution must
prevail, and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu must be sworn in as President on the
29th of May 2023, in accordance with the constitution.
