The Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, has appealed to Rotary International to support efforts aimed at recovering thousands of Benin artefacts looted during the 1897 British invasion of the ancient Benin Kingdom.
The appeal was made during a meeting at the royal palace in Benin City between the Benin monarch and the Chief Executive Officer and Secretary-General of Rotary International, John Hewko.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the monarch urged Rotarians across the world to use their international influence and connections to advocate for the return of more than 3,000 artefacts currently held by foreign museums and private collectors.
The artefacts were carted away after British forces invaded the Benin Royal Court during the 1897 expedition, an attack that led to the destruction of parts of the kingdom and the dispersal of priceless cultural treasures across Europe and America.
Speaking during the visit, Oba Ewuare II said many of the stolen artefacts remain in private collections overseas, particularly in the United States.
“Many of our artefacts are in the hands of private collectors in America. I know that because I have seen them,” the monarch said.
He called on Rotary International members worldwide to collaborate with the Benin Royal Court in promoting cultural restitution and engaging institutions abroad on the need to return the artefacts.
“Members of Rotary Club are all over the place. I would like you to join forces, engage your European counterparts, and inform them that you are collaborating with the Benin Royal Court towards the return of about 3,000 artefacts that are out there,” he added.
In his response, Hewko praised the traditional ruler for his commitment to peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Edo State and across the country.
He said Rotary International recognised and appreciated the monarch’s efforts in fostering unity and peaceful coexistence among communities.
“Your Royal Majesty, it is with great pleasure to be here in your Kingdom. I bring greetings from Rotary International and on behalf of the 1.2 million Rotarians around the world,” Hewko stated.
“The concept of peace is of extraordinary importance for us. We commend you for continuing to promote peace and bringing communities together, especially in a world facing many divisions and challenges,” he added.
