The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has raised strong concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent decision to extend the tenure of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
In a statement signed by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze warned that the extension could stall the career progression of Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) BU Nwafor, an indigene of Anambra State, who is next in line for the top position.
The group described the move as a setback to the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusion, stressing the importance of ensuring regional balance in national leadership appointments.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide is concerned that the extension of CG Adeniyi’s tenure may affect the anticipated elevation of DCG BU Nwafor, who is due for retirement in October 2026. With the extension, the prospect of her assuming the position of Comptroller General appears jeopardized,” the statement read.
Citing the federal character principle enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, Ohanaeze emphasized that appointments to sensitive positions should reflect national unity and fair representation.
The group called on President Tinubu to reconsider the decision, urging him to promote inclusivity and uphold a sense of belonging among all geopolitical zones.
