After a five-month medical sojourn in Iran, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, the supreme leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), and his wife, Zeenah, have returned to Abuja to a warm reception from thousands of jubilant supporters at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The Shi’ite leader’s return marked his first major public appearance since his release from Kaduna prison in July 2021, underscoring a significant moment for him and his followers. Sheikh Zakzaky, addressing the enthusiastic crowd, expressed gratitude for the welcome and provided updates on his health, indicating ongoing recovery efforts.
While acknowledging improvements in his condition, Sheikh Zakzaky noted the possibility of returning for further treatment after six months. Reflecting on his journey, he recounted meaningful encounters, including a meeting with Ayatollah Ali Khomeini, which seemed to strengthen his resolve to continue his mission in Nigeria despite past governmental opposition.
“We will continue what has been started (revivalist Islam),” Sheikh Zakzaky declared, emphasizing resilience in the face of adversity. His unwavering stance resonated with supporters, serving as a testament to his steadfast commitment to his cause.

The Sheikh’s return to the public eye comes after years of detention and legal battles, following the tragic events of December 2015 when the Nigerian Army attacked his residence, resulting in the loss of numerous lives, including family members.
Their release in 2021 and the subsequent return of their travel documents in 2023 facilitated their medical trip abroad, signaling a new chapter for Sheikh Zakzaky and his supporters. The grand reception at the Moshood Abiola Stadium symbolized renewed hope among his followers and underscored his enduring influence in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
