Nigeria will continue their push for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title when they take on Mozambique in the round of 16 on Monday at the Fez Stadium.
A win would see the Super Eagles reach the AFCON quarter-finals for the 12th time, further extending their record number of last-eight appearances ahead of Egypt. Mozambique, on the other hand, are making history with their first-ever appearance in the knockout stage after failing to progress beyond the group phase in their previous five outings.
Nigeria have enjoyed dominance in past encounters between both sides, remaining unbeaten in five meetings, with four wins and one draw. Their only AFCON clash came in 2010, when the Super Eagles recorded a convincing 3–0 group stage victory through goals from Peter Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins.
The Super Eagles head into the tie in fine form after winning all three group matches against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. They scored eight goals in the process — their highest-ever tally in an AFCON group stage — while conceding four. Nigeria’s overall AFCON win count now stands at 61, just one behind record holders Egypt.
Ademola Lookman has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers, contributing two goals and two assists to earn a place in the group stage Best XI. Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s leading striker with 32 goals in 49 appearances, is expected to lead the attack, supported by captain Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Raphael Onyedika in midfield. Defenders Semi Ajayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel are also set to return to the starting line-up.
Reflecting on the team’s group stage performance, Lookman said the Super Eagles were far from satisfied.
“We had a great run in the group stage, and I am thankful to everyone who voted,” he said. “But this selection is for the whole team. We have bigger targets here in Morocco, and we are not there yet.”
Mozambique booked their place in the knockout round after recording their first-ever AFCON finals victory against Gabon in the group stage. Despite a 2–1 loss to Cameroon in their final group game, the Mambas showed resilience, with Geny Catamo becoming the first Mozambican to score in consecutive AFCON matches.
Led by coach Chiquinho Conde and captain Domingues, Mozambique will rely on defenders Nené, Bruno Langa and Reinildo Mandava, while Chamito, Faisal Bangal and João Bonde are expected to drive their attacking threat.
Cameroonian referee Abdou Abdel Mefir will officiate the encounter, assisted by Elvis Noupoue and Carine Atezambong.
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has cautioned his players against complacency, stressing the need for focus as the tournament progresses.
“We will not get ahead of ourselves,” Chelle said. “We will keep working hard and remain focused on each match.”
