Abuja — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with cash rewards, housing, and national recognition following their historic AfroBasket championship victory.
Each player received $100,000, while members of the 11-man coaching and technical crew were awarded $50,000 each. All team members and coaches will also receive three-bedroom flats at the Renewed Hope Estate. In addition, President Tinubu conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on the entire team and technical staff.
The recognition follows D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket title — and seventh overall — after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This victory cements their dominance in African women’s basketball since 2017.
The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, who announced the rewards during a special reception at the State House Banquet Hall, praised the team’s discipline and resilience. “You have brought great pride to Nigeria. Your excellence on the court has put our nation on the global map for sporting greatness,” he said.
Shettima commended Coach Rena Wakama for her leadership, calling her “an inspiration to young Nigerian girls.” He also applauded standout players Amy Okonkwo, the tournament’s MVP, and Ezinne Kalu, top scorer in the final.
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, celebrated the team’s dedication and the inspiration they provide to young women nationwide. “This victory is a statement of hard work, excellence, and national pride. It will inspire generations of Nigerian girls to dream boldly and pursue greatness,” she said.
D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo expressed gratitude on behalf of the team: “We are thankful for the opportunity to represent Nigeria and continue this legacy of excellence.”
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the win as a milestone for Nigerian sports, noting the back-to-back victories of both the D’Tigress and the Super Falcons as a sign of Nigeria’s growing strength in women’s sports.
The event highlighted President Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to recognising national sports achievements and strengthening athlete welfare.
