Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has returned to Bayer Leverkusen after his highly anticipated move to Italian giants AC Milan hit a stumbling block over medical concerns.
The 24-year-old forward spent the last two days in Italy undergoing extensive medical tests at the renowned La Madonnina clinic and Galeazzi Hospital in Milan. However, despite the assessments, the Serie A side has yet to grant final approval for his transfer.
Sources close to the negotiations revealed that Milan’s hesitation stems from Boniface’s past injury record. The Nigerian international suffered two cruciate ligament ruptures during his stint with Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt in 2019, in addition to recurrent muscle issues in recent seasons. These lingering concerns have reportedly made the Rossoneri medical team cautious about sanctioning the deal.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Sunday, noting that the forward has been instructed to return to Germany while Milan deliberates on its next steps.
“After medical tests at AC Milan, Victor Boniface returns to Germany, as there’s still no green light to his move,” Romano stated. “After 48 hours in Milano, Boniface will be back in Leverkusen today, waiting for AC Milan’s imminent decision.”
The proposed deal between the two clubs is structured as a €5 million loan fee with an option to buy for €24 million. Despite the uncertainty, both sides are expected to continue discussions, though the delay raises doubts about whether the move will be finalized before the transfer window closes.
Boniface, who enjoyed an impressive spell with Leverkusen last season, remains hopeful of making the switch to San Siro, but for now, his immediate future lies back in Germany.
