UEFA has confirmed that the 2026 Champions League final at Budapest’s Puskás Arena will start earlier than usual, with kick-off set for 6:00 p.m. local time instead of the traditional 9:00 p.m. slot.
The governing body announced the change on Thursday, explaining that the adjustment is aimed at improving the overall matchday experience for fans traveling to Europe’s biggest club football fixture.
“An earlier kick-off makes day trips more feasible, reduces travel stress, and allows fans to enjoy the occasion without worrying about late-night logistics,” said Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe, which collaborated with UEFA on the decision.
The final is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026, marking a rare shift in one of football’s most-watched annual events. Since 2010, Champions League finals have traditionally been staged on Saturdays, unlike the Europa League and Conference League finals that are held midweek.
UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin emphasized that the change is meant to benefit fans without compromising the prestige of the tournament. “While a 21:00 CET kick-off is well suited for midweek matches, an earlier kick-off on a Saturday for the final means an earlier finish — regardless of extra time or penalties,” he explained.
The last Champions League final saw Paris Saint-Germain lift their first-ever European Cup after a resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich. Attention now turns to Budapest, where the new time slot is expected to set a different rhythm for one of the sport’s grandest spectacles.
