Abuja, Nigeria – July 16, 2024: The Federal Government is set to introduce a new curriculum for secondary schools across the nation by September 2024. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during the 2024 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) policy meeting in Abuja.
“We are working hard to ensure that a new curriculum is introduced for secondary schools by September,” stated Prof. Mamman. He emphasized that the development of this new curriculum has been underway for the past year, with extensive consultations and planning involved. A stakeholders meeting is scheduled for August 6, 2024, to finalize the details.
Prof. Mamman assured that the new curriculum would be implemented in all secondary schools, both public and private, starting from the next academic session. This initiative aims to address the numerous challenges currently facing the secondary education sector in Nigeria.
Recently, the National Senior Secondary School Education Commission highlighted the critical issues plaguing the sector, including infrastructural deficits, the prevalence of unqualified teachers, an outdated curriculum, and poorly equipped libraries and laboratories. The commission called for greater collaboration to overcome these obstacles and improve the quality of secondary education.
The introduction of the new curriculum is part of the government’s broader efforts to revamp the education system and ensure that Nigerian students receive a modern and relevant education that prepares them for the future.
Further details about the new curriculum and its implementation will be provided following the stakeholders meeting in August.
